WORLD OF SPEED

Slightly Mad Studios & My.com are proud to announce World of Speed – a free-to-compete AAA massively multiplayer online action-racing game which introduces a new level of connected competition to the racing genre.
World of Speed centers around team-based play to encourage cooperation. Race clubs fight for control of an in-game location against other clubs. The idea is to own a given track. If this is accomplished, every racer that races on that track will see your club name and logo. Owning that location unlocks a clubhouse, a fully 3D social area for members to hang out. They'll also be able to earn club-only game modes. One, called Territory Wars, has clubs going beyond their first owned location, working to recruit and organize other players to take more locations to achieve world domination

But, if you're not good at racing but you know you’re friend is then you can play a support role, which is the equivalent of something like the medic in Team Fortress. “You can support your guy and contribute to your team maybe by being a blocker and stopping other people overtaking or as a damage dealer looking to take out competitors

Like an MMO from any other genre, Slightly Mad plans to update World of Speed often. New tracks and cars will regularly come down the line, as will new gameplay modes. A quick tease during a presentation listed what looked to be dozens of these upcoming modes. My eye caught several: Cat and Mouse, Freeway Pursuit, Destruction Derby, Movie Cars, Dirt and Dune, Emergency Response, and more. From the names alone these all sound like a lot of fun.

World of Speed looks set to offer an unintimidating entry point into the world of free-to-play MMO racing. However, its best ideas and most interesting concepts currently exist in theory rather than in a hands-on build. We’ll have to wait until later this year to find out whether the depth suggested by the XP, challenge and role-play systems materialises in practice and whether the microtransactions and social features that will form its lifeblood will be as accessible as its pick-up and play racing
